On a June evening — the hottest day of the year — the water supply in an ordinary apartment block suddenly stops. The building manager sets out to find the fault, triggering a strange movement through floors, flats and the destinies of those who inhabit them.
Five characters experience the same night, each from their own perspective: Fatima, Franziska, Khalil, Lomayer and Karpati. Their thoughts, memories and actions intertwine, diverge and collide. Reality gradually merges with dreams, fantasies and recollections, until a series of misunderstandings leads to an escalation no one anticipated.
An Arabian Night is a play about loneliness in the contemporary city, about the impossibility of truly meeting one another even when separated by only a few metres. In a tense, fragmented narrative, Schimmelpfennig stretches time, distorts space and allows language to follow the inner rhythm of the characters.
A seemingly minor incident becomes a trigger — unlocking hidden desires, fears and aggression, and transforming an ordinary evening into a night without escape.
