Black Comedy is an unusual play in which the central character is… darkness itself. What happens when darkness is brought into the light, and light is plunged into shadow? The question, “What does a person do when they are sure no one can see them?” sets the tone for the entire performance and guarantees laughter from the first to the last scene.
“This is an intelligent farce in which darkness illuminates human weaknesses,” says director Ivaylo Nenov. “The play relies on exceptional acting precision and rhythm and turns classic theatrical rules upside down, making the lack of light the main driver of the action. A process begins that seeks a balance between the comedy of the situation and the deeply human nature of the characters” he adds.
This production by Peter Shaffer is among the funniest comedies created in the second half of the XX century. Even at its premiere in London in 1965, the play quickly won the hearts of the audience and became a real theatrical hit.
