Rare Fools is the theatrical version of Mario Monicelli's film Perpetrators Unknown. The plot is outspokenly comic and reveals the pathetic attempts of a group of petty thieves to rob a pawn shop. They are glaringly unprofessional and totally unfit for the crime they had plotted. Their self-confidence though is inversely proportional to their capabilities.
The gang includes a clumsy athlete, a failed lawyer, a dismissed cinematographer, a talentless Sicilian mobster, and a bridegroom who returns to theft on his wedding day. Unlike most films today that glamorize criminals, this story makes it hard not to feel sympathy for these unfortunate characters.
Parallel with the theft, two love stories get nascent as well as “the crime of the century"… I am certainly not telling the plot as this is detrimental to any crime story.
Monicelli’s film is a landmark in Italian neorealism and received an Academy Award nomination in 1958. It featured legendary actors like Marcello Mastroianni, Totò, and Vittorio Gassman. The cast in this production is equally impressive.
„Със Симон Шварц преработихме сценария, така че да го доближим до съвременна България, а именно – бедна, крадлива и безперспективна за огромен брой хора. Между Италия през 50- те години на миналия век и България в наши дни има някаква „роднинска“ близост.“ Теди Москов
